Without giving too much away, there were quite a few surprises in this non-fiction piece. Nothing could be further from the truth of the characterization of Eric and Dylan as two kids who were bullied to the brink of lashing out on their peers. Cullen includes analysis from expert psychiatrists to repudiate that point of view. Cassie Bernall's death due to her profession of her Christian faith is also disputed. Cullen also questions the delays which many believe caused the death of teacher Dave Sanders.
The most compelling sections of Columbine are how the victims & perpetrator's families, teachers, students, local community, and even friends of the shooters must come to terms with the tragedy. Sadly, divisions will later ensure as people struggle to move on with their lives (if that's even possible).
For those who want to understand the nature & ramifications of a vicious crime, Columbine is a must read book. For those who read Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, you will find many parallels to Columbine. In fact, Picoult interviewed many of the key players in preparation of writing her ficitonal account.
